A great horned owl named GiGi was rescued by Wild at Heart Rescue in Mississippi, after being found with lots of injuries that were assumed to come from being hit by a car. The little owl was found to suffer from a massive head trauma as well.
According to Missy Dubuisson, the founder of Wild at Heart Rescue, “This bird was one of the most critical we have ever taken care of. The fact that this bird has lived is beyond comprehension.”
Fortunately, after an extensive treatment and great care from its rescuers, GiGi was nursed back to health. One particular rescuer named Douglas “Doug” Pojeky, now dubbed as the “birds of prey whisperer”, had a great role in the owl’s recovery.
“In all my years of working with birds of prey, I have never seen someone with such a bond with these magnificent birds,” Dubuisson adds, as she recalls GiGi trusting Pojeky completely. “It literally brings tears to my eyes to watch him interact with these birds. They absolutely know him and trust him. It’s the trust that you see in her face.”
Dubuisson also recounts the time when Pojeky was gone for some time to visit his family in Michigan. When he came back, GiGi was very excited, as she started dancing and even rested her head on his shoulder to hug him.
