Astronaut Mike Hopkins was on his way back from the International Space Station when he decided to record the spectacular light show that occurs when re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. This light show is caused by friction between the spacecraft and the atmosphere while reaching speeds 25 times that of sound. This friction can reach temperatures up to 1,650 degrees celsius (3,000 degrees fahrenheit), causing the spacecraft to turn into a ball of fire. This short video shows the spacecrafts heat shield burning away during re-entry providing us with this incredible show. Although it’s a short clip, I guarantee you’ll watch it more than once!
